Press release -

ZÜBLIN carrying out structural work in historic railway station building in Stuttgart

  • Contract value for ZÜBLIN around € 90 million
  • Full operation scheduled for 2025

The historic station building at Stuttgart’s main railway station, the so-called Bonatz Building, is being completely refurbished. The work, commissioned by DB Station&Service AG, forms part of the major Stuttgart 21 project. The Bonatz Building will be opened at the same time as the new underground station.

ZÜBLIN has been awarded the contract to demolish the previous supporting structure, reinforce the building and complete the new structural works in the interior. The order also includes the construction of the underground utilities building to the west of Bonatz Building. The contract value for ZÜBLIN is around € 90 million.

The 100-year-old Bonatz Building will retain its external appearance, including the characteristic clock tower and terminus station hall. A house-in-house construction method will make the building fit for the future: the new, ground-floor main access level with a total of 1,750 m² will provide barrier-free access to the future underground station as well as space for Deutsche Bahn service facilities, retail and catering. The Bonatz Building will also be extended by two light-flooded levels for a hotel, restaurant and conference complex. The new parts of the building will have additional basement levels, so that the existing foundation will need to be reinforced.

After completion of all refurbishment works in 2025, the new Bonatz Building will offer an attractive range of services that will make it more than just a station building by adding life to Stuttgart’s city centre.

The video “Alessa on the Bonatz Bau construction site” offers a look behind the scenes of the project.
