  • Distinctive structure as a signature feature of the building
  • ZÜBLIN as general contractor for turnkey construction

The exterior structural frame for the AirportAcademy on the LabCampus at Munich Airport is in place. The striking and complex reinforced concrete structure was completed by ZÜBLIN within a period of seven months. The company is acting as general contractor for the shell construction of two buildings on the LabCampus: LAB 48 and the AirportAcademy. With around 14,500 m², the new building offers space for offices and conference rooms as well as a highly inviting lobby area.

The structural frame for the AirportAcademy, which spans the ground floor and first floor of the building, was inspired by the airport’s runways and taxiways as seen from above. The eye-catching two-storey concrete frame, which will support another three-storey structure, is the signature feature of the building – and makes it a visual highlight.

The structural system further consists of a framework of flat slabs, columns and reinforced concrete bracing walls. The complete structural design was prepared by the STRABAG/ZÜBLIN Group’s Zentrale Technik competence centre. The ZÜBLIN team from Subdivision Bavarian implemented the design, building the challenging structure from in-situ concrete. Approximately 153 t of steel and 540 m³ of concrete were used.

In the next 1½ years, ZÜBLIN Bavaria will complete the shell of the building (scheduled to occur before the end of 2021), with the final completion and start-up of the AirportAcademy expected to take place in early 2023.

Construction work on the LAB 48 office building is also making rapid progress. ZÜBLIN completed the structural works in March 2021. Overall completion and start-up are scheduled for the first quarter of 2022. Further information here.
