Groundbreaking ceremony: ZÜBLIN to build modern student residence in Potsdam

  • Starting signal for turnkey new construction of 263 “BaseCamp” student apartments
  • Sustainable construction concept and execution using timber-concrete composite
  • Short construction time: just nine months to scheduled completion in September 2017

Construction is getting under way on new student apartments: Marcus Krause, town supervisor of Potsdam-Golm, together with representatives of the project management firm Triton Development GmbH and general contractor Ed. Züblin AG, yesterday officially broke the ground for the new construction project being built on behalf of the European Student Housing Funds.

The modern student residential facility is being built in close proximity to the Potsdam-Golm Science Park. With tenants such as the University of Potsdam and the Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes, the demand for housing is high. “This makes the student apartments a good thing for Potsdam,” says Marcus Krause.

The campus-style building complex will be managed under the “BaseCamp” brand. “BaseCamp” is characterised by a young design with spacious common areas where students can meet to learn, use the fitness centre and cinema box, or relax in the lounge. ZÜBLIN Thüringen and ZÜBLIN Timber have teamed up to build the residential complex consisting of six individual buildings. The gross floor area of 10,000 m2 will have enough space for 263 individual apartments and common rooms.

ZÜBLIN has been involved in the project since the design phase and has helped to optimise the design with regard to construction time and budget. The choice fell on an innovative timber-concrete composite construction using prefabricated parts. “We are happy to have found a reliable partner in Züblin who can complete the project in just nine months’ time,” says Dr. Andreas Junius, managing director of Triton Development.

“Our construction concept is sustainable and ecologically valuable: The structure and the façade are largely made of timber elements,” points out Torsten Teichgräber, business unit manager of ZÜBLIN Thüringen. When completed, the buildings will comply with the KfW 40 Plus Standard for energy efficiency. A photovoltaic system with battery as well as wood pellet heating assure a completely sustainable energy supply. The exterior walls are of full timber to make the ecological concept tangible.

The concept was designed by Karlsruhe-based architecture firm Irmscher, with the façade and detailed design by Munich-based architect Christoph Schneider.

The housing complex is scheduled to open for the winter semester 2017/18. First applications from prospective tenants will likely be taken in April.
